For people who like to think a little differently about their careers

General: 2006 Fairs a Great Success!

Young people from across the region with aspirations of forging a career in the arts flocked to this year’s round of Creative Careers Fairs held in Cambridge, Luton and Norwich to find out more about working in the arts. Attendees received access to one-to-one advice on education, training and jobs in the arts and creative industries. A number of inspirational workshops were also on offer and highlights included talks by Harry Potter star Chris Rankin (aka Percy Weasley) and Skids front man, former TV presenter and now successful full-time filmmaker, Richard Jobson.

Funded by Arts Council England, East, this is the third consecutive year that the Creative Careers Fairs have run and this year the number of venues increased from two to three with the Hat Factory in Luton coming on board for the first time.

Visitors were able to hone a range of skills, everything from finding out what it’s like to be a TV presenter reading from an autocue to having a go at being a DJ. Contributors available to share their experience at the fairs included: dancers, artists, directors, designers, actors, TV producers, writers, press officers and photographers. In addition, arts organisations such as the BBC and ITV were on hand to give advice along with a number of local arts related colleges and institutions.

John Hindle, Senior Craft Editor at ITV Anglia who attended last year said:
“The Anglia TV team thoroughly enjoyed the Creative Careers Fair. It gave us enormous pleasure exchanging our knowledge and ideas to a wide and receptive group, in the pursuit of nurturing new talent in the rapidly changing world of broadcast.”

Gina Woods who attended the fair on behalf of Aim Higher Norfolk said: "The fair has been excellent- it's fantastic to meet so many people under one roof to exchange ideas and information- this can only benefit all the individuals and groups we all work with."

John Davidson - Acting Director, Arts and Development, Arts Council England, East:
“The creative industries sector is growing faster in the East of England than in the UK as a whole. The fantastic response to this year’s Creative Careers Fairs reinforced the fact that there are a lot of talented young people in our region who are interested in a career in the arts and who need advice and support to help them plan their future”.
